Gelato Festival World Masters Opens Its Europe Leg in Budapest

Hungary hosted the first European stop of the new Gelato Festival World Masters season, the travelling competition searching for the world’s best gelato flavours. On 18 October 2022, 18 gelato artisans were due to compete at Bulfoni Bar Gelato & Design in Budapest for a place in the national finals in 2024.
The format
The Gelato Festival Challenge is organised by Gelato Festival with Carpigiani Gelato University, the world’s most renowned school for successful gelato entrepreneurs, and Sigep – Italian Exhibition Group, the premier trade show for artisan gelato. The tour aims to spread the culture of artisan gelato around the world.
Competitors prepared their gelato in a kitchen supplied by the organisers. Industry experts, local chefs and food journalists tasted and judged each entry. The three top flavours moved on to the Hungarian Finals of Gelato Festival World Masters in 2024.
About Gelato Festival
Gelato Festival began in Florence in 2010, inspired by Bernardo Buontalenti’s first gelato recipe of 1559. It expanded across Italy and Europe, reached the United States in 2017 and held 80 festivals before going worldwide. The 2021 world championship ended in December 2021 with a win for Adam Fazekas of Budapest, after a record 3,500 gelato artisans were judged.
