Gelato Day 2022 Video Contest Returns with Dolce Sinfonia

The video contest for European Artisanal Gelato Day came back in 2022, this time built around Dolce Sinfonia, the Flavour of the Year for the tenth Gelato Day on 24 March.

The first edition

In 2021, dozens of master gelato makers from across Italy and Europe took part in the first video contest run by Artglace. They opened their workshops and showed in a 90-second video how they made the 2021 Flavour of the Year, Mantecado. The result was a tour of the finest traditions across the whole gelato supply chain, from livestock and fruit farms to machinery and display cases. It showed makers who care about every detail and every ingredient, and who share a passion across great distances.

The Dolce Sinfonia challenge

The official recipe was created by Silvia Chirico, owner of Tenuta Chirico in Ascea (Salerno). Its ingredients are chocolate, hazelnuts, fresh ricotta and figs in a rum syrup. Gelato makers had to use it to produce a short 90-second video showing how to prepare the flavour.

  • Entry was free and open to all European gelato makers.
  • There were two stages: the first until 14 March, the second from 15 March to 30 September.
  • A jury of experts rated the originality of the presentation, video quality, how well the production process was shown, and the look of the tray and decoration.
  • Each stage had its own winner, plus a third video from the highest-scoring runner-up in the overall classification.

Full rules were published on gelato-day.com.

Videos for everyone

All videos received by Artglace, including those from makers outside Europe who could not enter the main contest, were to be published on the Gelato Day YouTube channel. That let gelato lovers worldwide see inside the workshops and the skill behind a fine tub of gelato. Gelato parlours across Italy and Europe were also invited to sign up at gelato-day.com and post their events for 24 March 2022.
