European Gelato Day 2019 at FICO Eataly World, Bologna

Europe celebrates gelato every 24 March with European Gelato Day, held each year since 2013, and each edition picks an official flavour for thousands of gelato shops to interpret. In 2019 the flavour was Tiramisu.
A special day at FICO Eataly World
On Sunday 24 March 2019 a special celebration ran at FICO Eataly World in Bologna, the world’s largest agri-food park, in partnership with the Carpigiani Gelato Museum and the Santi Palazzolo gelato and pastry shop. At Palazzolo’s, visitors could order a “Tiramisu with chocolate crumble” created by the Sicilian pastry chef, and a second special tiramisu gelato variation was on offer at another stand in the park.
The Carpigiani Gelato Museum team ran a full day of workshops in the Carpigiani Gelato University production space:
- 10 am: a workshop for children aged 6 to 12, making gelato on a stick.
- 11 am: gelato basics and how to make the Tiramisu flavour.
- 12 noon: instructors showed how to recognise and enjoy good artisan gelato.
- 2:00 and 4:30 pm: two sessions on creating a sorbet from a favourite seasonal fruit.
Where the day comes from
European Gelato Day began in 2008 from an idea by Longarone Fiere and Artglace. On 5 July 2012 the European Parliament officially established the European Artisanal Gelato Day, noting that artisan gelato represents excellence in quality and food safety among fresh dairy products. It remains the only day the Parliament has dedicated to a food. Each year a flavour representing one EU country unites gelato parlours for 24 hours.
